Why the Law of Attraction Has Not Worked For Me
85© Copyright 2010 Patrice Walker All rights reserved
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying the Law of Attraction (LOA) doesn’t work. Up until recently, I simply hadn’t been applying it in a way that was bringing me what I want instead of what I don’t want. Here’s why.
- The Field Center
A lot of the clarification I've experienced about why I haven't been getting the results I want with the Law of Attraction came from reading the wealth of free material on this site.
“Trying” to Attract Prosperity
My goal for some time now has been to attract prosperity and abundance. At one point, about three years ago, I came into A LOT of money. Funny thing, though. As soon as I received it, I could hear a little voice in my head warning me, “What are you going to do when the money runs out?” So, even though I had all this money, I was afraid at the same time that it was going to run out at some future date (an important point as you’ll read later).
So I went to work, furiously trying to establish a new home-based business or activity that would bring in money on a regular basis. I tried just about everything: real estate, several network marketing ventures, writing, cash gifting, and internet marketing. Along with getting involved in these ventures, I also made sure that I was focusing on what I want (or so I thought) – amazing success. I visualized and affirmed success and prosperity as often as I could, believing that this would bring me into vibrational alignment with what I wanted and attract it to me. But I never achieved the success I thought these actions would bring me.
Now, the voice that I heard when I first received that financial windfall was getting louder, and I’m starting to really get worried that, if I don’t DO something quickly, I’m going to run out of money. So, I started thinking, “I better find me a J-O-B fast.” Something I never thought I’d have to do because I had been successfully self-employed for 21 years, doing what I love, i.e., writing instructional materials for Federal government employees. But the money was slipping away faster than I could blink, and I figured it was time to bite the bullet and look for work. That’s what I’ve been doing for several months now, applying for job and job after job. But nothing has come through, and … you guessed it … the money continues to run out. Now I’m really freaking out.
So why hasn’t all that affirming and visualizing and positive thinking worked? I believe because I never addressed that underlying fear that the money was going to run out. Instead of believing in and aligning with success and prosperity, I allowed a fear to usurp my thinking and control my actions.
Focusing on the Problem Doesn't Work
First, I know without a doubt that consciousness creates. Everything that I experience in life, including my physical body, is a manifestation of my beliefs, not only about what’s real, but also about who I am. This concept of “consciousness as cause” is supported not only by the new physics, but has been proclaimed in the oldest spiritual texts. Even Jesus said, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING (emphasis added), ye shall receive” [King James Version]. In other words, whatever you ask for, you have to believe (in consciousness) that you’ve already received it (that it already exists) BEFORE you can receive it (as a physically manifested fact).
Therefore, my attempts to change external conditions failed because my underlying belief has been that something “in the world” is wrong or broken and needs fixing. Trying to fix something that I perceive as broken, whether through doing something concrete or visualizing, affirming and thinking positively about it, hasn’t worked because my attention has been focused on the problem (i.e, running out of money) which I have believed is real. The more I try to fix it, the more of my attention is focused on it, and the stronger and more entrenched it becomes, i.e., more money runs out.

F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real)
This leads to the second issue I had to confront, and that is fear. Fear is an interesting animal, but I’m realizing, not as scary as I once thought, thanks to some reading and conversations I’ve had over at my new friend, Ande’s LOA blog, The Secret is Wags. And thanks to ideas shared by one of her readers, Greg, I’m pretty sure I’ve discovered the role fear has played in all of this and what to do about it
Here’s why fear is so intriguing to me. The thing or situation feared usually hasn’t even happened yet, but is instead a future event we imagine MIGHT happen. What we end up doing, then, is looking for ways to protect ourselves from something that doesn’t even exist. My fear was that I would run out of money, even while I was flush in cash, and my actions (business building and job hunting) were based on a need to protect myself against something that hadn’t even happened. Why not imagine something wonderful happening instead? Each imagined reality has an equal chance of occurring (they both exist vibrationally), but the one that manifests is the one we give the most attention to.
Now when I feel fear rising, I can simply stop and remind myself that I am imagining something that isn’t real and therefore have no need to protect myself against. It’s also a reminder to focus instead on what I want and to know that I already have it.
Alignment is Queen (Latifah)
I had a dream this morning in which Queen Latifah killed my mother. She denied it, but I knew without a doubt that she did it. I told her that I NEVER wanted to be her friend again, and made her leave. She looked at me with this knowing, “Cheshire cat” smile on her face and walked away.
This dream was the linchpin that brought all of this understanding together for me. It’s about two “me’s” that currently exist. Queen Latifah symbolizes the “me” I am becoming; she’s confident, empowered, rich, and completely aligned with what she wants. Actually, I already AM this version of "me" vibrationally. My job is to align with her and allow her to manifest. My mother represents the old “me” who worries and is anxious and fearful (my mom was, in fact, a big worrier). Queen Latifah knows that this old me has to die in order for her to live, even if, in the dream, I didn’t know it. But I do now.
What do I need to do, then, to manifest this new version of me?
- The first thing is to be clear about what I want, and that is “more than enough money.”
- Secondly, in order to believe that I’m going to receive it, I have to know that I already have it.
- Third, because I know I already have it, I can relax and allow it to unfold as a manifested reality.
LOA would say that what I want exists “vibrationally” and that all I need to do is align with it or feel as if I already have it. I can’t just think it; I have to feel it to be true. Moreover, I’m aligning not to make something happen, but to feel how good it feels to be in alignment because, as I sustain this good-feeling alignment, I don’t have to worry about the manifestation. Its unfolding is inevitable because I’m no longer blocking it with opposing beliefs and fear.
This allowing or letting go of the need to “make it happen” is the hardest part of LOA practice because we are so used to DOING things to MAKE something happen. But that greater part of us – God, Consciousness, Source, Being, Pure Awareness – knows far more than we could ever know about how to bring it to us. What a relief to know that I don’t have to work so hard to make something happen based on my much more limited perspective.
This doesn’t mean I don’t do anything, however. I can relax and do what’s before me to do, whatever that is as my day unfolds, feeling the exquisite alignment that lets me know at a deep level of Being that what I want already exists and that its manifestation will occur in the perfect way and at the perfect time.
I’ll let you know how this works for me.

Such a brilliant hub here PWalker281. And I often think that the law of attraction is nearly impossible to work in the US because we are so far removed from prosperity and abundance - by design. We have to continually start at zero whereas in other cultures they have the benefit of quality food, guaranteed healthcare, endless unemployment benefits, no proliferation of guns, people that think they same way, and if they are highly taxed (like I am in NYC) the money stays there and supports the country and does not go to a Bush war etc. We have so much to overcome - it is exhausting.
Then we tend to follow a path to wealth that someone has already created - in their search for wealth.
I pretty much think we have to let go of all society taught us because it taught us to be nothing more than consumers. Even my folks in the South do better than me because they were always able to grow their own food and grow crops to sell - but most of us can't, making us even more dependent on money lest we starve.
We have to clear our head of so much. I sub p/t but I remind my students that they are not there to only take in the knowledge they are offered - because then they will be no smarter than the books or curriculum - they are there to challenge, question all the information - which when you think about it - is pretty useless in preparing us to be successful. We need to ask why.
Quite a bit here but I hear so many talking about the law of attraction and how it doesn't work but as you point out - it can - first we have to clear our head of the taught clutter of which there is so much. You've offered the tools we need - which means I am going to bookmark this and rate it up! Thanks so much for such an informative - can do, can make it happen hub - that doesn't parrot the same old tired stuff.
I enjoyed the hub and the shift towards awareness :)
Wow, this is so what I needed right now. At first, I was so positive about my current situation and I knew everything was working out the way it's supposed to, and then I let other people fill me with fear. I know I need to push away this fear and negative energy and bring back the positive. Thank you so much. Great hub! :-)
PWalker281, this is awesome! I've known about this for forty years, and it helps to hear it again from a fresh perspective.
I think the title of your Hub is a bit of a misnomer, though. It seems to me that the "law of attraction" always works. The key is knowing what you have your attention on. In other words, awareness is crucial to living the happiness one desires. That said, reading your Hub helped me be more aware of the negatives my attention had been on. Very nice to see them melt away.
One technique I learned ages ago while studying Scientology had to do with something called "unsticking the flow." If attention seems to be stuck on a fear or something similar, then visualize pulling in more of it. If you're stuck in an avalanche, picture pulling the entire mountain down on your head. If done right, fear doesn't stand a chance.
In 1977, on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, during rush hour traffic, I found out just how powerful we can be. One moment, I was creating more frustration by having one car after another jam in front of me, causing me to screech on my brakes, repeatedly. The next moment, I felt invulnerable and at peace. Traffic could do whatever it wanted to do. I pictured wide open spaces and smooth sailing all the way to my destination. The next moment, cars began evacuating the center lane in front of me. Within seconds, I had two miles of empty lane in front and walls of snarling traffic on either side. And in all the time it took for me to speed up and run that gauntlet, not one driver decided to turn into the empty lane in front of me. Such a miracle did not make me rich, except in spirit.
The Judeo-Christian perspective has this secret embedded in Genesis. Chapter 1, verse 26 talks of God creating man in his own image. That would make us non-physical, spiritual and immortal sources of creation. A wish is a picture of self separated from the object of desire by a distance. With a wish, one is merely creating the perpetuation of that distance. Being aware of what we have our attention on is one key, but so is faith (100% confidence) and humility. Genesis also says that, after God created, he rested. A creation has no persistence in the space-time continuum until it is "allowed" to have persistence. To do this, one needs to "rest" from their creation. This is the attitude that nothing else needs to be done, for the creation is a done deal. And suddenly it manifests. Pretty cool stuff.
Hello PWalker281, I enjoyed reading your hub! I am a business owner in Charlotte and like you am somewhat of a professional writer (i.e. I write business plans and the like) as a Consultant. I have been on a "spiritual journey" for most of my life and authors like Neale Donald Walsch of Coversations with God, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer and many others have all given me deeper insight of the possibilities we have as individuals but like you I have let fear win sometimes and just recently began working aggressively to overcome it. I like the saying that "all paths lead to the same source" and I have chosen mostly to create my own path rather than walk the paths laid by others. I enjoyed the video in your hub so any suggested reading or videos would be appreciated! Thanks for sharing here! Johnny
This is so on point as you know. I was riffling through old emails and I saw one from you Pat where we were discussing dreadlocks (I was a member of some crochet forum and that's how we met cyberlly round about '06). Anywho . . . wondering if you were still around cyberspace I followed link until here.
And now . . . here is this concept AGAIN, that has been hitting me in the face all year. It started with a girlfriend suggesting I read a book by Capps about the power of the tongue. Then later I saw Wayne Dyer on public tv speaking about the power of something or another, oh, "attraction" (have self not to purchase that book) and I am aware that I have much to adopt in my life for all this to be so .. . overcoming the negative self-talk is monumental. Watching what I allow to come out of my mouth is a habit which MUST be broken . . . it's no longer optional.
Now, running into you again and the positive words, concepts written here . . . I suppose instead of focusing on a seemingly monumental task; quit telling myself it is monumental and tell myself "It is done!"
I'm working in surely.
Thank you.

Thankyou,What a lovely insight! Please keep Writing,
Thanks for sharing your experience on the Law of Attraction. All that glitters is not gold!
Well you did it again! this is the second hub of yours that I have read, and again I have found the content to be deeply moving and has very much resonated with me.
This stage that you are spiritually evolving from is also the stage that in the past couple of days I have realized that I must overcome.
I relate completely with the notion that a person can be doing everything "right" but they won't manifest their desire unless they release the fear and anxiety that that is impeding their progress.
It is almost like we have to pick a goal, then pretty much not care or not if we get it..that way there is no resistance blocking all the good LOA practices.
Thanks for writing :)
You know, we learn from our "mistakes." I like how you identified why it wasn't working for you and made corrections.
Hi Patrice,
How's the Field Center information working for you? I've recently "stumbled" upon it, and it's some stunning stuff. This is coming from someone who's read the Elias materal. Unfortunately, it seems they've archived the Realities blog. You can still read it by searching for terms though.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm reading "Your Faith is your Fortune" and really enjoying it. I didn't know all the guys writing about reality creation were borrowing from a book written so long ago.
I enjoyed reading your article on "Why the Law of Attraction doesn't work for you." Thanks for this information, Good article
Hi Pwalker,
I didn't read all the info here as it's late and I've got to get up and pull another long day at work tomorrow, however I get the gist of what you're dealing with in life. It's the common thing we all deal with. I am a christianm, and I don't say that to cram anything down anyone's oh so sensitive throat, but just as a fact of who I am. I've been a believer for almost 30 years this coming February (hooting and hollering in background). Only very recently I have come into a very profound understanding of something internally. Of course as a christian I believe freedom internally and therefore externally as a result is directly tied to Jeesus death on the cross and subsequent resurrection. However, the benefits the bible speaks about in relation to this are very elusive for many professing christians. The reason, and many have pointed this out, is that while one may read and "intellectually" believe the words concerning the freedom Christ purchased, one does not truly accept it in the heart, where it really counts that is. The heart instead, on a subconscious or almost hidden level, believes otherwise. I came to this conclusion: the heart cannot hold to or believe two contradictory things at the same time. The problem one encounters then is that while reaching out for freedom, the heart is occupied in all it's energy in holding to and believing negatively, and though there is a desire on one level for that which brings freedom, desire is not enough. One must release that which the heart is holding and which is keeping it in bondage in order to lay hold of that type of belief that brings release or freedom internally in such a manner that is felt and real and has real results in a person's life. The stronger belief will always nullify or negate any belief that is not as strongly held by the heart. In the case of the christian, to get more specific, the message is that one has been set from guilt and condemnation thru Christ's substitutionary work. The inability to receive or believe this causes one to live in a guilt ridden, fear based state based on who they have been as a person and the wrongs they are aware they have committed. Reception of a new truth must be preceded by the letting go of the old truth. This is not easy, but seems the only way. The person who continues to hold on to their guilt and therefore fear does so because they believe they deserve it. They/we cannot believe we have a right to be forgiven. If the message of the cross of Jesus is true, then a right, or permission has been granted to forgiven oneself completely as a basis for living. The problem comes when one cannot and will not believe this is for them, and therefore holds to the old mindset of self condemnation. The problem therefore is not the inability to believe for forgiveness to permeate the inner person, but that a usurping prior belief of self condemnation still rules the roost and therefore the heart cannot do two things at once. It cannot receive the new until the new is let go, and at the same time an embracing of the new begins to occur. One's prior or old and longtime belief prevents or negates the entrance of the new. The heart has no problem believing, I believe. I once thought this was the case. Now I see differently. If the heart had a problem believing, it could actually believe in nothing. But this is not the case. The heart can and does believe, but it chooses the negative because it believes this is the logical and therefore right or deserving belief based on who one is or has been as a person in their life. The facts of one's wrong ways thru out life are real and true. However, the work of Jesus on the cross administering a real forgiveness has occurred. The catch is that one must dare to believe or receive this forgiveness as a fact into one's belief system. And here is the real problem. The heart chooses what it will believe. It cannot believe the new fact of forgiveness and therefore freedom because it does not yet really believe it deserves it. Therefore the old remains and holds sway, and all attempts to integrate the new law of one's personal forgiveness thru Jesus become futile as long as what is given the power to reign inside one's self is the belief that I cannot be forgiven nor do I deserve forgiveness. Belief empowers us, whether we believe wrongly or rightly. Belief has the power to drive us in any direction, and does. The question is: what belief is actually holding sway inside me? That is where the puzzle becomes solveable. If I know what I actually am believing, I will then understand why I am driven a certain way. There is a scripture that briefly says: as he thinks, so he is. The way I actually think, or believe, is what determines how I will be, how I actually am. I will follow or live in accordance with what I actually believe. Our problem is an ignorance of what we actually believe, which drives us, on the subconscious level, which I believe is the level of the heart, the deepest place of who we really are. Anyway, found your thoughts interesting, and you seem like a real thinker/seeker, and just wanted to share my perspective on this very interesting topic. God bless you PW!

Really interesting hub Pwalker.Struck a few chords for sure! I recognised similar in my own thinking some time back and have adjusted it, it's still a work in progress...thanks for sharing, very enjoyable read
Good Hub. Any actions you take in reaction to negative thoughts will not be productive. It still seems to me that your desires are still in your mind. You say you try all these different ways to make money and visualize success 'till you're blue in the face but still fail. It quickly became obvious to me as I read your hub that you are not pursuing your HEART's desire. I wrote a hub about this very thing yesterday. http://hubpages.com/hub/Important-New-Information-
The rest of your hub is quite accurate regarding the obstacle illusions we need to overcome but you failed to write about the need for emotional intensity. Don't you agree this is Key?
This hub is simply amazing...I really do mean it, I look forward to reading more of your hubs.
The law of attraction can be tricky when you begin to consciously use it. Matter of fact, you have been using it your whole life. You need to define what prosperity means to you. What financial abundance means to you. I have a friend that used the law of attraction to amass a small fortune. He has millions of dollars in the bank, three houses that are paid for, drives a $110,000 Mercedes Benz, and he gets $26,0000 a month rent on top of that from a building that he owns. Do you want to know how he got financially wealthy. He knew exactly what he wanted in life and nothing got in his way. Not fear, not what others might think, nothing. He knew that he was worthy of receiving financial abundance, he learned how to get out of his own way and allow money to enter into his life.He took risks when he needed to, but he is also very money savvy. The trick in life isn't learning how to earn money, it's learning how to keep it. When you do receive money you will need an action plan as to where you will place your money, if not it will all be spent. Prepare your life first for what you are going to do with the money. Don't wait for it to show up and then decide.
Thanks PWalker281!!!
Thank you for this hub entry. It explains so much to me!
This is the second hub of yours i've read in row now (the last one being the Neville Goddard hub) and i'm very satisfied and pleased that I did as you reminded me of a couple of things.
When you talked about looking at your fear/problem instead of finding a solution or focusiing on your desire you reminded me of a story Anthony Robbins once told. He told of an experience where he was learning to race a sports car with a professional instructor sat alongside him, and every time he came to one particularly hair-raising corner, he would stare at the wall as he hurtled towards it. His instructor told him to stop doing it because it was making him unconsciously steer towards the wall, but in the end the guy had to literally twist his head to face the other way, while going very fast. The point is that, for some reason whenever we face problems, we seem to stare at them, petrified, shocked and afraid, all this does is draw us closer to them. As you say, look for the solution, not the problem and the same effect will occur, you'll be drawn to a solution. A solution chosen by you, a desire, a wish fulfilled.
Oh man, I forgot the other point. Well, it is 3am, my brain is shutting down. :)
Good read. Thanks
Well said by BkCreative: "am going to bookmark this and rate it up!"
So much material here even from comments to learn from. Thanks, Everyone!
Thank you for your post, PWalker281!
Thanks for sharing a hub of HOPE that has already manfested! Fear no more~ Voted Up & Rated Useful
Hi PWalker281 I found this hub very interesting, the way we sometimes de-rail ourselves. The subconscious is still a mystery to science and I have studied some of these ideas for many years. They work if you do.

Hi PWalker, I have a friend that is very into "the secret" but doesn't seem to get it at all? I don't know but I think it can be very frustrating for people who are not self aware? I don't know how to tell her that one must have some awareness about ones situation before any change is possible.
hello PW,
I have tried to apply the law of attraction for a couple of days and i have to say that since than i have had really bad luck..i am really trying to be positive but it seems i get only negative. I think i have a fear inside me that it won't happen because i am in a very emotionally and financially misfortuned situation. I am interested in ways of applying the "allowing" process of the law of attraction, what did you do to get in alignment and allow things to happen?
Thank you
hello again and thank you so much for your reply...it is a very well-thought-out answer and very helpful. I appreciate it!
can you recommend any book that has helped you better understand and apply the law of attraction? i have read michael losier.
Thanks
thank you again PW :)
hello again PW,
I recently stumbled across a video of author james arthur ray from "the secret" being convincted for killing 3 people in a sweat lodge...i got a very negative vibe from viewing that, and kind of shook my belief in the law of attraction. What is your opinion on this and how can i still watch the secret knowing there is a man that killed 3 people there and still believe it?
Thank you
I deeply enjoyed this awesome positive hub on attraction, I have always knew about such a law, since I were a young baby, because that's how we get our parents attention.
In the college course, Psyche 101, they taught us all about the id, ego, and super ego as well as response to stimuli, which also suggests the same laws and principles.
Your on the pathway towards least resistance here as well as enlightenment, and its the most logical pathway towards success as well @ PWalker281.
I think I'll create a hub that will stem from this very hub you've wrote on the subject of attraction as well, so that I don't waste any more comment wall space, plus I'll credit the hubs creation to you as well.
Voted up in every way possible, bookmarked, and getting shared with all them fancy sharing buttons as well as put into my Pearltrees collection.
Thanks for sharing such a powerful, informative, inspiring and thought provoking hub.
I liked this a lot, really insightful. I'll read more of your hubs on LOA, maybe you should keep writing about it.
Yes, keep sharing your personal experiences with LOA, because it's nice to read personal stories. Thanks for sharing yours.
