My Favorite Romance Authors

By a Former Romance Novel "Snob"

I’ve been reading romance novels for almost 20 years now. Ok, confession time! I used to be a romance novel snob. I couldn’t imagine why any educated, independent, free-thinking, self-respecting woman would read them, including my friend with the PhD in linguistics who loves them.

Then one day, while browsing in a favorite bookstore, I came across a rack of romance novels and said to myself, “I bet I could write one of these.” I bought a novel with a futuristic setting to read and was immediately hooked. Almost 20 years later, however, I still haven’t penned one. It’s harder than you think, especially for a former tech writer like me. Writing stories is an entirely different animal (Yeah, yeah, I hear you, “Excuses, excuses.”). So I’ve been content to read them.

Stories About "Happily Every After"

Romance novels are essentially love stories that involve a man and a woman (usually – some publishers are venturing into love stories involving gay couples) who meet, fall in love, endure some kind of conflict that breaks them apart, and then overcome it to live happily ever after. This description may sound a bit trite, especially when you know how the novel will end. But it’s getting to that happy ending that makes them compelling.

So here’s a list of some of my favorite authors. I’ve tried to annotate it to give you an idea of the kinds of books each author writes; there are many “sub-genres” within the romance genre, including historical, contemporary, romantic suspense, paranormal, and futuristic. I also provide an indication of the “intensity” of the love scenes. My scale goes from “sweet” where the sex is implied, never overtly described to “sensual” where the love scenes are fairly realistic in the context of the budding relationship to "HOT!" where the love scenes are VERY explicit.

My "A" List

Susan Johnson, a former art historian, has been a favorite since I first read Blaze over 15 years ago. She's a formula writer, i.e., same plot, different characters, but her writing is excellent. She recently started writing contemporaries after writing historicals for a long time. (HOT!)

Nora Roberts has been my romance author idol for a long time, primarily because she is so prolific.  She writes mostly contemporary fiction. Her older books focused more on the love story while the newer ones are primarily romantic suspense with a love story subplot, some of which include graphic violence. She also writes futuristic crime novels as J.D. Robb. Roberts has a HUGE backlist (over 100 novels), so if you're looking for the latest one, be sure to check the copyright date. (Sensual)

Deborah Smith, a former journalist, is a GREAT writer. Her stories are unique, her characters complex. I loved A Gentle Rain. (Sensual)

Sharon Shinn is one of my all time favorite sci/fi-fantasy writers. A love story is always a component of her novels. Read especially Wrapt in Crystal. Her books focus on feminism, class, and racial differences. (Sensual)

Susan Wiggs writes multi-generational stories often set in small town USA. She’s a very good writer who used to write historicals, but is now writing contemporaries (Sweet to Sensual)

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of the best romance authors out there. Her contemporary stories include complex plots with rich, three dimensional characters. (Sensual)

Cheryl Holt’s first few books were excellent, but her stories became a bit redundant after a while. She writes historical romance. Read especially Love Lessons. (HOT!)

Madeline Hunter is one of my favorite historical writers. Her complex plots and excellent characterization make her books well worth reading. (Sensual)

Jayne Ann Krentz writes pretty formulaic stories (e.g., the heroine is always a business woman), but she's very funny. She writes historicals as Amanda Quick, contemporaries as Jayne Ann Krentz and futuristics as Jayne Castle. A paranormal theme runs through most of them. (Sensual)

Diana Gabaldon’s novels are about Claire, A WWII battlefield nurse, who time travels back to 18th c. Scotland and falls in love with reluctant Jacobite Jamie Frazier. Sounds "hokey" but she's an excellent writer whose novels are rich in historical detail and include just about every kind of healing modality you can think of. The first one in the series is Outlander. She also writes about one of the Outlander characters, Lord John Grey, a high ranking officer in the British military who also happens to be gay. I wrote a review of Lord John and The Private Matter on Amazon (as "Native Washingtonian"). You either love them or you hate 'em. The Outlander novels are close to 1,000 pages (Sensual to HOT!)

J.R. Ward is the author to read If you are into vampires. She writes about the Black Dagger Brotherhood and has a HUGE following. My local Borders had to stock the latest one, Lover Avenged, behind the counter because people were stealing them! These are some really hot guys who don't drink human blood (usually). First in the series is Dark Lover. These novels are also close to 1,000 pages (HOT!)

Sandra Brown is a good romantic suspense writer who keeps you guessing whodunit till the very end. (Sensual)

Elizabeth Lowell
is another good writer who used to write historicals as Elizabeth Lowell and contemporaries and some futuristics as Ann Maxwell. But I think she's using the former name exclusively now. (Sensual)

Jennifer Crusie is a very funny contemporary writer. She wrote two books with former green beret and best selling author Bob Mayer that are some of the best novels I've read. (Sensual)

Ok , there you have it. Many of these authors, like Susan Johnson, write about characters (and their descendants) who appear over several novels, so be sure to check the copyright dates and read synopses at Amazon before buying them or checking them out of the library. I also try to find out as much as I can about an author's background. That tells me a lot about how well she writes.

Nice list. I worked in a used book store for about 5 years and these authors were always our customer's favorites. We sold their books as fast as we got them in. Everyone loves a happy ending :-) Rock on!

Thanks for the great hub! I love romance novels because it's a nice break from studying economics and other data, etc. They usually have wonderful characters and a great story! Have you ever read Lisa Kleypas? She's one of my favorites!

Hey Kendall, sorry for the delay in responding. I haven't been keeping up with my comments lately. No, I've never read Lisa Kleypas, but now that you've recommended her, I'll be sure to check her out. What kind of romance novels does she write?

I love this list. Romance novels are my ultimate junk food/escapeism/reading in the bathtub pleasure. I have them hidden in the back of my bookshelves behind my novels that I'm not quite so embarrassed to love, ("Why yes, I HAVE read all of Philip Roth's books! May I point you towards some Proust?") :-) I'm slowly realizing that I need to let go of the shame and embrace the great storytelling and relationships so many of these authors are able to write. I have to add Lavyrle Spencer to this list. She's hard to find, I think her books are mostly out of print, but she writes fantastic romances and family dramas focused on complicated emotional situations. Separate Beds, Years, and Hummingbird are my favorites of hers. Thanks for your suggestions! Several of my favorites are on here as well as some new names to me!

Hey there, Guest! Thanks for reading this hub. I've been reading romance novels since the early 90s and I used to feel the same as you do, but I got over it. I figure if my PhD friend loves them, who's to say they aren't worthy of being read. In fact, we NEED romance novels, given all the crime, horror, and violence in a lot of popular fiction these days. I LOVE romance novels! They not only help me to escape, they make me feel good for having read them.

The only reason I didn't add Lavyrle Spencer is because she stopped writing a good 10 years or so ago, so like you said, her books are probably out of print. Several of her books are on my "keeper" shelf, including Vows, November of the Heart, and That Camden Summer. I tried to reread one, but it's so old and meldewed I gave up .

You might want to check out PaperbackSwap.com where people swap paperbacks they own. The books are free to receive and sending an average-size paperback costs less than $3. I just browsed the titles and found a slew of her books there. Thanks again for stopping by. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I haven't been monitoring my comments as well as I should.

I read a lot of romances. I was a snob once too who, like you, read one and got hooked. I just recently started reading Nora Roberts and like her stuff and I am reading an Elizabeth Lowell right now. Julia Quinn is, by far, my favorite. Nice list!

May I suggest Santa Montefiore, her novels are a kind of sophisticated chick lit! Very enjoyable. I'd start with 'The Gypsy Madonna' - my favourite.

Thanks for the list!

@To Start Again, thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. If you just started reading Nora Roberts you're going to have a LONG reading list. She has written so many books, all of which you will enjoy. I'll check out Julia Quinn.

@whatkatieread, Santa (Simon?)Montefiore - what a wonderful name! Is that a man writing romance novels? I'll definitely have to check out The Gypsy Madonna. You're welcome, and thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Glad you enjoyed it, wilrohoades! I should update this hub because I've found another author who writes well (#1 qualification to be on my favorites list; #2 - a good story teller) that I'm enjoying.

I also wrote an article on another site about why men should read romance novels that you might like. Here's a link.

I voted this hub up for useful, P.W.! For anyone interested in romance novels this appears to be an excellent guide to navigating one's way around the literary romance universe.

Let me go slightly off topic. You mentioned sciene fiction/fantasy; while sticking to powerful female writers, let me recommend an African-American female science fiction writer calld Octavia E. Butler. Start with her novel (one of a trilogy) Wildseed; when she deals with sex and love, I suppose you could call her writing sweet-to-sensual, in between but not really "sweet."

Wildseed features a very strong black woman central character, Anyanwu, a super-strong shapeshifter (and she's not even the most amazing of the "gifted" people we meet in this story; or maybe she is...). And then's there's Doro, a living, body-hopping spectre, is the only way I can think to describe him. You see, Doro was killed as a very young boy in ancient Ethiopia, before he had a chance to develop into what he was meant to be, before he had a chance to develop his "gifts." His task now is to build a family -- how would you imagine a creature like Doro could build a family-- right, by assembling all kinds of psychically gifted people like himself! And so on and so forth.

Listen, P.W., I didn't mean to ramble on. I really did enjoy your hub, and found it very well organized.

Take it easy.

Hey wingedcentaur! Fancy meeting you here!

The first book I read by Octavia Butler was Kindred; from there, I was hooked! I read the Wildseed trilogy many years ago, and most of her other books. What I remember about her writing was that she was one of the most succinct writers I've ever read - no wasted words anywhere. I read the last book she wrote before she died -- about vampires, called Fledgling. And I got a chance to hear her speak when she came to Washington DC to give a lecture at a local book store. She's one of my favorites.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment (enjoyed your "rambling"), WC, and for your positive feedback. Now you have to read the one about the Black Dagger Brotherhood :-).
