A Favorite "New Thought" Author

One of my favorite new thought authors is a gentleman by the name of Neville Goddard. Neville, as he is affectionately known, was a Christian metaphysician born on the Caribbean island of Barbados in 1905. He came to the U.S. to study theater, but after meeting and studying with several teachers of his time, he devoted his life to writing and speaking on the subject of how thought and feeling create reality.

Feelings Are Magnetic

His most profound statement is that you must assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled to bring about the manifestation of your desire. What exactly does this mean? It is much more than simply affirming what you want to create. When you assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, you actually feel the feelings that you would feel as if your desire had already been achieved.

Adding the feeling component magnetizes your desire and attracts its fulfillment to you. It tells your very impressionable subconscious mind that you, in fact, already have what you desire.

Your subconscious mind does not know if what it is receiving is real or imaginary. It simply takes as fact whatever you are thinking and feeling and works behind the scenes to bring it to you. This is why it is so important to monitor your thoughts and feelings to be sure you are thinking and feeling what you want, as opposed to what you do NOT want.

A Personal Experience

I had a very powerful experience of this principle several years ago when my daughter was in high school. She called me to her bedroom one evening, crying about a very nasty looking, pus-filled bump that had been lingering for a while. One look at it and I exclaimed, “We have to go to the hospital and get that lanced!” Talk about the wrong thing to say! This sent her over the edge into hysterics, screaming and sobbing that she did NOT want to go to the hospital.

What is a mother to do? I could not calm her down or reason with her, so I decided to go back to my bedroom, close the door, and sit quietly in the darkened room, affirming and feeling that she was already healthy and whole. I affirmed this over and over again. Soon, an incredible feeling of joy, relaxation, and peace came over me. And then, an image appeared on my mind’s inner screen of my daughter soaking in the bathtub. Immediately, I knew what she had to do. I rushed back to her bedroom and told her to run a bath as hot as she could stand it, add Epsom salts, and soak. When she finished her bath, she came to me, much calmer, showing me that the bump had already started to shrink in size. I recommended she do this again the following night. A few days later, all signs of the nasty bump were gone.

It would have been impossible to try to sit with her to figure out what to do because of both our emotional states; we were too stressed out to think clearly. Moreover, the conscious mind is limited; it cannot know everything. However, the subconscious mind has access to all memories and is connected to Infinite Intelligence. All answers lie within it if we just give it an opportunity to work for us.

Don't Worry About "the How"

Neville made another profound statement, namely, that assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled wills the means of its realization. In other words, everything required to bring the desire to us is contained in that felt assumption that we already have it. If we will just get quiet enough to assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, the steps required to make it so, as Star Trek Captain Jean-Luc Picard loved to say, are revealed to us. They may not come as immediately as they did to me; but they will come.

Therefore, we need to be vigilant for these inner promptings that move us in the direction of our desire. Instead of trying to figure it out, we act when inspired. Inspiration comes intuitively and can appear in several ways.

See my hub on how to recognize intuitive guidance to discover what your dominant mode(s) of reception are.

An Easy Formula to Follow

Assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled is simple:

  1. Decide what you want.
  2. Take time often to get quiet and imagine that you already have what you want; let the feelings of joy, satisfaction, fulfillment, etc. wash over you. Bask for a while in these wonderful feelings.
  3. Go about each day relaxed and confident, assured that your desire is on its way to you (i.e., don’t worry about how or when  it will come).
  4. Act when inspired.

The only way you will know if this works is to try it out for yourself. Let your experimentation be playful, and you will soon see that assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled does indeed will the means of its realization.

Wayne Dyer has taken the principles and concepts of Neville Goddard, a 20th century mystic, and clarified them for modern-day, 21st century readers. When you change your concept of yourself and assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled, manifesting your desires is assured. Wishes Fulfilled shows us how.

Wishes Fulfilled: Mastering the Art of Manifesting
Amazon Price: $13.50
List Price: $24.95

Wayne Dyer Demystifies Neville

Wayne Dyer is well known for demystifying the works of ancient mystics like St. Francis of Assisi and Lao-Tze, making their teachings accessible to modern-day readers.

He's done it again in his latest book, Wishes Fulfilled, in which he explains the importance of "being able to feel in your body what you desire to manifest" and to "live 'from that end,' as if it had materialized into the physical realm." (Wishes Fulfilled, pg. 11) This is exactly what Neville's "assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled" means.

If you find Neville's writing a bit to esoteric, then begin with Dyer's Wishes Fulfilled. What's great about the book is that he shows you, in modern language, how to move from changing your concept of yourself (where it all begins) to manifesting your heart's desires by assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled.

I honestly dont think you should as it is helpful but I will leave that decision with you. I dont understand how the duplication rules work but I havent seen any like this one myself.

Glad you found the example helpful, KenWu. Just so you know, this hub got a "duplicate" warning from HubPages because it used to be on a blog I once had, and that article was stolen by a ... I forget what they're called, but they are websites created by stealing content from other sites and posting them for the adsense income. Seems when I change the title, the duplicate warning disappears, so I'm going to do that. But if you don't recognize the title, the photo of Neville will help you identify it.

I too am delighted to have "found" your hub and to hear Neville. He's been a mentor of mine since about 2003. One of my books has fallen apart from studying and reading every year because his words of truth are so beautiful and healing. God bless you for your continued sharing and love.

Hi Daya Devi-Doolin! Thanks so much for stopping by. I know exactly what you mean about Neville. My favorite book of his is Your Faith Is Your Fortune. I think that's the most powerful one he wrote. If you're interested in a Christian minister who was popular from the 60s to the 80s or so and who based his teaching on Neville's work, check out "giftofmoney's" Youtube videos on Reverend Ike.

Hey there, Dream On. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I came across your hub by "hub hopping." If you click "my account" at the top right of your profile page, you'll see it listed in either the last or next to last column at the top of the page.

As for Adsense, you have to set it up if you haven't already. I haven't done it in a while, so I don't quite remember, but if you enter "how to set up Adsense" in the little search box at the top right side of the page, you should find information on how to do it.

Glad you're enjoying my hubs, and I'll definitely check out more of yours.

I experienced the feeling of a fulfilled desire yesterday during a yoga class while in shivasana. It was so peaceful and beautiful. It made me feel relaxed and secure and I knew my wish wasn't fulfilled yet, but I somewhow was absolutely certain it will fulfill and the feeling of that was amazing, like I already had it. I hope that the steps to having it will be revealed to me as you say. I definitely feel differently after this experience. I am happier and more confident, more secure. Thank you for describing it here.

You're quite welcome, Yogini. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Your experience sounds wonderful! Now that you've had it, you can relax and allow the steps to come to you. No need to "hope" that they will come because the feeling assures you that they, in fact, will.

What is "shivasana," a kind of yoga asana?

:) Another tip that I tried out but it didn't work for me. I guess, it all depends on the individual. My experience is that some things are simply not meant to be and forcing yourself into thinking that something "is" while it is actually "not" may cause great trouble to a person. Yet, I accept that some other people had a different experience, so we can't really say what is true. I think that the ability to actually achieve "everything you want" is very rare.

PWalker281 profile image

PWalker281 Hub Author 14 months ago

I'm coming to realize that the "problem" is that in focusing on what you want and trying to attract it, you're actually keeping it away because the underlying belief is that you don't have it and THAT'S what is being attracted, a continued state of not having it.

So the thing to do is know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you already have it, despite appearances, and you will attract it, but that's hard for a lot of people, including me :-(, to do

Hey. Nice hub. Neville Goddard was a genius in the New Thought field, one of the very best. His idea that the bible is a series of lessons is intriguing and definitely holds water when you take a look through his writings. Have you studied his 5 lessons? They are like gold dust and have helped me so much in changing my life and my outlook. I now use multiple techniques everyday to instill the feeling of already having what I desire, visualization, affirmations, pictures and scripts etc.

My keywords are "Consistency" and "Momentum". Once you have those, there is no stopping the attraction process, and like you Pwalker, i have successfully attracted a number of things into my life.

Thanks for the nice read. God Bless Neville Goddard! :)

Hello Richawriter! You don't know how meaningful your words are on this lazy Sunday morning; I was feeling somewhat frustrated about not being able to shift some aspects of my current life and asked my inner guidance, "What can I do?" And up pops your comment on my Neville hub.

I used to be so confident about this process until last year which was extremely difficult for me, mostly because I allowed myself to be caught up in "appearances" and couldn't pull myself out. I am slowly doing that now, but want to accelerate the shift back into the creative life I used to live.

What are the 5 lessons? I've read just about everything Neville has written but don't recall anything with that designation.

You are so right - consistency creates momentum, and once you achieve momentum, the sky's the limit.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!!

Thanks for your usual helpful hub, PWalker281! I enjoy finding hubs like this that serve as affirmation for my not-so-common practice. It keeps me keeping on even though people around me really do not believe in the same principles. But that's alright too. Neale Donald Walsh has written that "So long as you are still worried about what others think of you, you are owned by them."

This also gives me another good read to look forward to: Neville Goddard. Thanks for mentioning about his works.

As always, you've come up with another informative hub! Thanks and congratulations!

You'd be surprised, Quirinus, the people who hold views similar to ours is growing. I've been involved with these philosophies since the late 70s, early 80s - it was really lonely back then :-). Thank goodness for the internet where it's fairly easy to find like-minded people. I'm glad you found the article inspiring. Neville is one of, if not, my favorite new thought author.

The audio is different. I have a book called The Secrete that details the laws of attraction. I saw the documentary too and I have found these methods work for me, mostly through the power of my prayers but also because I truly have FAITH in the power of my prayers and wants. Great hub! Smile!

PWalker281 profile image

PWalker281 Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Carlon Michelle, I'll have to admit, I prefer to read Neville than listen to him, but whichever way the information comes, it's always helpful.

The law of attraction and other so-called universal principles have been around for a long time and get repackaged throughout the millennia. It is age-old wisdom.

And yes, faith is EVERYTHING when it comes to prayer or whatever method you use to consciously create reality.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting.
