An Overview of the New HubPages Ad Program

The New HubPages Ad Program
You should have heard by now that HubPages has instituted a new ad program that is now open to all hubbers to participate in. I signed up a few days after it opened up, but I have to admit that I was initially confused about how the program worked in conjunction with Google Adsense ads. So I decided to take some time to read all of the information HubPages has provided on it and then write an article that describes its salient points.
I will do my best to answer following questions:
- What is the HubPages new ad program?
- How has the ad layout changed?
- Are there any “hub eligibility” requirements?
- What can you expect in terms of earnings?
- How are your earnings determined?
- What information does HubPages provide on how well these ads are performing?
- How do you sign up for the program?
- Where can you get additional information about the program?
Hopefully, by the end of the article, you’ll have enough information about the program to help you decide whether you should join. I must say here that there are still some aspects of the program that I don’t fully comprehend, and I’ve pointed them out where appropriate. But I think I understand it enough to give a decent explanation of the program's major features.
What is the new HubPages Ad Program?
HubPages has grown enough in respectability over the years and is such a large publisher of high- quality web content that it is now able to court major advertisers and display what it is calling “premium ads” on our hubs at large-website ad rates; hence, the new ad program.
HubPages announced the program several months ago and invited a select group of hubbers to participate in beta-testing the program. Once the test was completed, the program opened up to all hubbers.
How has the ad layout on hubs changed?
This is the heart of the matter. If you understand this, then you’ll be able to determine whether the program is going to be able to meet your income-earning requirements.
First of all, you should know that Google rules only allow three Adsense ad units and two Adsense link units on a web page. Therefore, HubPages had to work within this framework in deciding how and where to place the new ad program ads.
The layout on the left shows the old ad format that consists solely of Google Adsense ads (in blue), although it looks like only four of the five Adsense ad slots are depicted. I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but it would help me understand the differences between two programs if the old layout included five blue ad units. Maybe someone at HubPages can clarify this point.
On the right is the new ad layout which shows the premium program ads in peach and the Google Adsense ads in blue.
How the new ad layout differs from the old layout
The new Ad Program uses the two Google Adsense link units to display “four additional full-size ad units,” which means you are now getting paid through Google Adsense on only three Adsense ad units. This also means that your Adsense income is probably going to drop somewhat, but HubPages assures us that the premium ad income will more than make up for it. I’ll talk about this in a minute.
It’s hard to tell in this illustration which of the two Adsense link units were replaced by the new Ad Program ad units, but as long as you understand that two of your five Adsense ad units are now being used to place four of the new Ad Program ad units, that’s all you need to know.
Okay, here’s the tricky part.
Google Adsense ads can appear in any one of the four new Ad Program ad units. This is because HubPages places the highest performing ads in those four slots, and it may very well be that a Google Adsense ad is outperforming an ad from one of the premium advertisers. However, your income from these Google ads is paid via the HubPages Ad Program and not via Google Adsense.
Have I t horoughly confused you?
See results without votingAre there any “hub eligibility” requirements?
Here’s an aspect of the program description that I don’t fully understand. HubPages says that:
“If you opt-in to the HubPages Ad Program, we will review each of your Hubs for eligibility. If your Hubs have advertising-appropriate content (that is within the guidelines of HubPages and our ad network partners), then those Hubs can run ads from the HubPages Ad Program.”
Source: http://hubpages.com/faq/#hpads-description
I don’t know what “advertising-appropriate” content is, nor do I know what guidelines HubPages and its ad partners are using to select hubs for these ads. If anyone knows what any of these means, please feel free to add a comment with an explanation.
How are your earnings determined?
The new Ad Program pays you based on ad impressions or CPMs (cost per thousand) and not clicks. For those of you who don’t know what an ad impression is (don’t feel bad, I had to look it up because I wasn’t sure either), here’s about the best definition I’ve found:
“It’s a measure of the number of times an ad is seen by a user. In that sense it’s almost like a page view, except it only refers to a por¬tion of the page — where the ad is.”
Source: http://heisel.org/blog/2008/11/29/ad-impressions/
So, readers don’t have to click ads in order for you to get paid. All they need to do is go to the hub where the ad is being displayed. This may be why, when you’re logged into HubPages and view your own hubs, you only see Google Adsense Ads. I don’t think HubPages is going to pay you to view the new ads on your own hubs, although I’m not entirely sure about this.
UPDATE: Both Ad Program and Google Adsense ads can be seen when you view your own hubs, and yes, those impressions do count toward your earnings. But don't go crazy viewing your own hubs just to increase your earnings.
The 60/40 rule still applies – HubPages pays you on 60% of the ad impressions and keeps 40%. Of course, you should already know that it is a “no-no” to click your own ads or the ads of other hubbers.
What information does HubPages provide on how well these ads are performing?
HubPages provides statistics on how well you’re doing. Simply go to Account and click Earnings. Then select “HubPages Ad Program” in the column on the left to view:
- The number of ad impressions you have,
- The CPM or cost of 1,000 ad impressions, and
- The amount of money you’ve earned during the last seven days and in the current and previous months.
How will your earnings change if you opt into the new HubPages Ad Program?
This is the $64,000 question. As a result of its beta-testing, HubPages says that hubbers can expect to earn more when they opt into this program, despite the fact that Adsense earnings will probably drop. I assume the increased earnings occur because these premium ads pay better than Google Adsense ads. And since you are not relying on clicks, but ad impressions, and only need to get traffic to the hubs where the ads are displayed, you should, in theory, earn more.
My initial earnings:
In the first few days after I signed up, I earned $.44, and I’ve made $.67 in the last seven days. I earn about $1.50 a month in Google Adsense income. So if I continue to earn $.67 every seven days, by the end of the month, I will have earned $2.68 ($.67 x 4 seven-day periods in a month). That’s almost double my Google Adsense earnings.
It’s a little embarrassing to reveal my paltry earnings to the world, but I thought it important for you to see how much my earnings have changed since I opted into the program. I’ve only published 34 hubs and I’m not as “SEO-savvy” as a lot of hubbers out there, so I could probably earn more if I wrote more and did a little backlinking to increase my traffic.
The important point here is that, if this earnings trend is accurate, then you should earn some good money by opting into the program.
How do you get paid?
In order to get paid, you need to have a PayPal account, and associate it with the HubPages Ad Program. You’ll be able to do this when you sign up for the program (instructions are provided below). You’re paid once a month, and the payment threshold is only $50 (compared to Google’s $100 threshold).
This is one of the better features of the program because not only do you get paid sooner, you get your money faster. Once it’s in your PayPal account, you can transfer it to your bank account and have it in a couple of days, as opposed to waiting for Google to issue you a check.
How do you sign up for the program
There are three main steps you need to take to opt into the program:
Step 1:
Before you can sign up to participate in the HubPages Ad Program, you need to have a Google Adsense account . Why? I’m not completely sure, and I really don’t want to speculate about the reasons for this, so I won’t. If you don’t have a Google Adsense account, simply follow these instructions, and you should be good to go.
Step 2:
Next, you need to have is a PayPal account which you must associate with the HubPages Ad Program. All this means is that HubPages needs your PayPal account email address so they can transfer the money you’ve earned into that account. Go to PayPal.com to set up an account.
Step 3:
When you’re back at HubPages after setting up your Google Adsense and PayPal accounts, go to the Earnings section of your Account page, click on the HubPages Ad Program, and follow the instructions.
Important Note:
You'll need to supply tax information, including your social security number at this point. This is a completely secure process, and HubPages needs it so that it can report your earnings to the IRS (an IRS requirement) and issue you a 1099 form at the end of the tax year.
Where can you get additional information?
If you need more information about the program, you should check out:
The HubPages Learning Center which provides a full description of the program
FAQs about the HubPages Earnings Program which includes the Ad Program, and
The HubPages Terms of Use.
You can also contact HubPages with specific questions if you still have them.

Update 6/24/11
I've been tracking my HP Ad Program earnings over the last two months. I have experienced a noticeable drop in earnings in June. In May, I was averaging about 11 cents a day on my 36 hubs. So far in June, that average has dropped to about 5 cents a day. I'm going to give it another month to see what happens. If things don't improve, I may very well switch back to Adsense. Will let you know what happens.
Update 7/30/31
My HubPages Ad Program earnings jumped to $3.35 total for the month of July (I'll probably earn a few more cents since the month isn't quite over yet). I added two hubs since my last update a little over a month ago, to bring the total number up to 38. I also changed to a subdomain on July 22, but I noticed the increase in earnings before then. On a few days, I was making as much as 20 cents a day, with a seven-day average of over $1. I know this isn't a lot of money, but these stats give you an idea of how well the HubPages Ad Program is working, which is my intent in posting them.
I do a little bit of keyword research when I write hubs but very little backlinking after they are published. I tweet them which also posts them on my Facebook page. I don't have a whole lot of Twitter followers, but I do have a fairly decent number of Facebook friends. I also have a list of my crochet hubs on my crochet blog with links back to the hubs. Finally, I know from Google Analytics that my crochet and health hubs get the most page views and are consequently my biggest earners, so I will probably be concentrating on those niches in the future.
I'm hoping that the switch to a subdomain will result in even more page views and impressions, and consequently more earnings. I'll report back at the end of August to let you know what my earnings are for that month.
For more information on why HubPages switched to subdomains, check out this Wall Street Journal article.
UPDATE 11/1/11
After a drastic drop in page views for three weeks in September, I am now earning more money than ever with the HubPages Ad Program. Since July, I think I've added around four to five hubs, but my page views have more than doubled since before the September slump. I've been told that Google was probably tweaking its algorithm. I can't explain what happened, but I'm not complaining. I made a whopping $10.50 in earnings from the HP Ad Program in October.
Unless something unusual occurs, this will probably be my last update. I'm pretty much convinced that the HP Ad Program pays much better than Google Adsense and will be sticking with it for the long haul.

Thanks. I only noticed it recently and did a search for more info. Your Hub came up and I found it useful..... but I would like to know what the threshold is for those in UK. ££
Thanks
Hi Pwalker,
I lived in Kailua for a while. Nice Island.
I have spent the last several weeks reading and learning about this new hobby-career. Your hub was interesting and informative. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this helpful hub.
I'm still trying to learn the ins and outs of hubbing as I try to refine my writing. I so appreciate practical information like this.
Found this hub via another one that answered my question on what happens if a hubber should accidentally click on one of their own ads while trying to find out why a broken link notice was on the hub. 8-]
Thanks again. Voted up and useful.
Hey Patrice! Great information and clearly and succinctly put. So it looks like this new ad setup is more positive than not. As for myself, I'm going to continue experimenting with adsense and see if I can improve on last months surprising haul, although small, it was still nice and shows that the keywords I'm using are attracting some tasty ads because I've only had very few clicks.
Keep up the good work Patrice. I really want to do 2 hubs a day, but unfortunately that's just too much at the moment. I'm still learning the ropes but I have set myself a respectable goal of 250 hubs for this year, and that's with working full-time and being a husband!
Well, I look forward to chatting again Patrice.
Take care. Rich :)
I am hoping the ad program will pay off. I have made a small amount with it so far. Very informative.
Very useful info here, especially for newcomers like myself. Thans for sharing.
Very informative and helpful. I have signed in to HP Ads and I have made more in seven days than in two months with Adsense. I can't reveal how much since I believe that Google prohibits people from disclosing earnings, but I am not entirely sure about this.
Thanks for the info.
Thankyou for answering questions. This article was well written and easy to understand. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for this great hub. I have learned something new. I think the Hub Page Ad program is a great income generator.
Thanks! This hub answered all my questions :D Specially the bit about why my hubs never displayed any HP Ads (I was looking at them logged in...)
Just linked this to my new HP milestones hub. Please let me know if you have any objection. Thanks again for a helpful hub.
A liitle discouraging about the minute amount of earnings by these comments. New at it my self and wondering why hubpages is not more active like some other sites with webnars to learn how to get your hubs seen. Am I missing something? Thanks for taking the time to explain it and for telling the truth about your earnings. HUBpages needs to step it up so hubbers can get financial rewards not just new friends.
Thanks for a clear and concise explanation of the system.
I signed up with some trepidation, but now after your explanation, it is much more clear to me.
Good Job
Thanks for taking the time to explain this. The point you make about getting paid faster with the new system only applies if you are not already earning enough for a monthly payment from Adsense and if you get paid by check. I have signed up to the new program - one week ago - but as my earnings so far have been only $3.46 I will probably switch back to Adsense only again.
This was very useful, thank you. Nina
Why aren't there many ads here?
So I have a question: If other hubbers look at my adds do I get paid?? great hub thank you!!!
I know we aren't NOT suppose to click on ads at all. If that is so then the more we read other hubs and other hubbers read ours the more money to be made. Thank you,for the great info!!!
I didn't know when I signed up I actually signed up to be paid by impressions. That's awesome! I thought it was per click. Makes sense though. I earned three cents in my first day, which I suppose isn't too bad.
Not sure if I am enrolled in this new program or not though. If I associated my adsense and paypal accounts with hubpages when I signed up yesterday morning, do you think I'm already enrolled in this?
I like the prospect of making money per impression much more than clicks.
Marked as useful and voted up. :]
Definitely helped. :] Thank you. It looks like I am enrolled in it after all, thank goodness. Looks like I made three cents yesterday. hahah I guess not too shabby for my first day.
Thank you for sharing to inform other writers about the ad program.
Hi PWalker281, Thank you very much for a very informative Hubpage. I did find it very helpful! :)
Thanks for explaining how the ad variations work. I was worried since I made a killing off Google last year and this year I noticed a huge drop. Even when traffic went up, I still made less on Google because HP's ad's are taking the place of my ad spaces. I am still worried that Google might be paying more than HP. Not sure how to find out.
Very interesting hub. Thank you for publishing. I was very confused with the income opportunities until I read this.
Thank you for explaining the mechanism of the Hubpage Ad program. Voted up!
I've been making about 10.00 a day (between 9-16.00) I didn't realize it was only ad impressions, that really makes me want to get these 1k hubs up there now! I have the content just have to "build" the hubs from them- tedious- I'm working on building 500 hubs in the next 6 months by converting my old adsense sites into hubs (60 domains 800 articles/hubs). I convert them into hub series one hub per page from the site and linking them to each other (next/back links at the top and bottom and a table of links/navigation on the first hub)...
Can't wait to see how this fares- so far every 10 hubs I'm adding is adding a pretty nice amount to my overall earnings- I have 444 hubs currently... thanks for writing this!
Hi PWalker,
I must admit I'll have to reread your hub to get it straight.
I do have a couple of questions:
1.It seems I am on adsense, why do I not see any earnings?
2. Does the ad program work for Canada?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
My earnings shot up to 13.00 a day average now... they keep rising...
Jerrico, you write some really informative and really in depth articles about the world of Hubpages. This article about the Hubpage Ad Program has given me a greater understanding of how the program positively works for Hubbers. Thank you for sharing, and I do look forward to reading more.
PWalker281, I do apologize I arrived at your page through Jerrico's page. I just became one of your newest fans too, and keep writing the wonderful and informative articles.
Excellent Hub - voted up! Really appreciated the honesty and forthright manner in which you laid out the basics and realistic monetary expectations supported by facts. Imagine this will encourage new writers to keep going and not get discouraged if they aren't immediately making lots of money. From the type of feedback you are getting on this particular Hub, it looks like you have struck a nerve. GC
that's how it works- a well written hub marinates and just gets more popular with time :) I have one that has reached over 1 million visitors with no interaction from me it's also earning a third of my income here :) was 300 words
ah that is a consortium of tactics that will be in my upcoming course on HP :)
I'ts being broken into 11 books for simplicity :) hub artist, hub tactics, hub strategy to name a few, I'm running a bunch of tests as well. I'm planning to teach this course actually at rented college class rooms etc... but also offer it as a course... I'm mainly doing it for fun
I'll make sure you can afford it, actually if you'd like to proof read the first book I wrote to primer the newbies mind into the "Realm" of internet marketing and promise not to show anyone, I'll send that to you- PM me. It's 17 pages and I'm thinking of giving this one away to promote it and to filter out who isn't serious about making money online,
I think it has needed information for newbies to this area, many have a romanticized version of Internet marketing/making money online so quit before they reach the "money" phase...
I'd like a perspective from you as your likely the type of person who I'm trying to help in this area... be nice to see what you think. I kind of go over the course in this one (how to make money on hubpages) but mainly the psychology of internet marketing (based on hubpages)
Thanks, this is the best explanation I found.
Thanks for the great hub about the monetization question here on hubpages. I too have seen a great increase in my results with the hubpages ad program over the last two months. I will almost double my revenue from hubpage ads for the third month in a row.
As a newcomer to Hubpages, this was a very helpful post, and my eyes did roll to the back of my head only briefly! I think I am gonna read it again tomorrow and let it soak in again. thanks
Hi Patrice
The HubPages Ad Program is definitely an massive incentive for writers and publishers looking to leverage earnings from increased traffic.
Had I found this hub many months back, I wouldn't have spent much time understanding what the HubPages Ad Program is all about. Your overview is comprehensive, detailed and very straight forward. It is a must-read for all new hubbers! Highly recommended.
Princesswithapen
Great hub! I will definitely use this as a tutorial when I set up a HubPages Ad Program account.
I agree with you about the jump in views and earning that occurred around October-November I am earning way way more income through hubpages ad-program than Google ad-sense and will am 110% loyal to the HP Ad-Program as well. great hub!
Wow. Great info. I'm sure I will come back to this. Helps to clear up the complexity of the program.
Thanks for presenting all of the info in a concise manner. It does indeed seem better to be paid on a CPM rather than CPC basis.
I was wondering about this new program and you've laid everything out quite nicely. Thanks. Voting this Up and Useful.
Lot's of good info. I am thankful for the program because it has increased my earning.
Thank you!
Thank you for clarifying things about the HubPages Ad Program, PWalker281. While my Google AdSense earnings have dropped in the past months, the new ad program has more than made up for the shortfall. I'm happy with the HubPages program.
You have brought out the facts very nicely about Hub's Ad Program which is useful and popular now a days. I myself am also feel happy to be associated with Hubs Ad Program.
Very useful hub, Patrice! I was interested in this subject and your updates were very interesting. Voted up and useful.
Hi PWalker, I liked you hub. You were very clear and honest in explaining it all. I just signed in to Ad program. I earned $0.10 in earnings today. I don't know how log will it sustain. What is happening at your end?
The CPM rates are quite good ..Thanks for this informative hub
the best and most clear hub i have ever read
Very informative hub, thanks.
What i write in hub
I've been wondering for a while whether I should sign up for the Hubpages Earning Program because I'm hesitant to give out my tax information...but it sounds like it's better than Google Adsense right? because with the Adsense you earn only on that chance if people click on the links, but with the ad program you earn based on the number of impressions your page gets right?
It's a $100 for your first adsense payout? I did not know that.. learned something new again! Thanks Patricia :D
I will bookmark this useful and informative article, thanks for the information.

Great hub, Patrice! My earnings with Adsense went drastically down since I've joined the Hubpages Ad Program, but I'm satisfied with my earnings so far (considering that I don't have relevant backlinks for any of my articles). The tax thing is a little bit confusing since I live in another state (and continent) - we don't have a social security number, but some other identification number, and I'm not happy about submitting it online :( We'll see how it all goes...
